The clasp used to attach this beautiful butterfly to your clothes or necklace, is an early safety clasp. These clasps were the first clasps who offered an additional guarantee. A few decades later this safety clasp was improved therefore this kind of clasp was never made or used again for precious brooches like this one. Because of this we can state that this floral brooch was made between 1890 and 1910, the years where this type of clasp was the newest invention and best type of clasp for valuable jewellery.

Along with the clasp, the unmistakable characteristics were also typical and often used during the reign of Queen Victoria. Such as the abundance of details, the old cut gemstones and the subject of the brooch, nature. Queen Victoria has devoted much attention on bringing nature into her home throughout her reign. For example animals but also plants were often depicted in jewellery but also as decoration on furniture and other utensils.

The most beautiful thing about this butterfly is the abundance of engravings which almost brings the butterfly to life. The creator has not only engraved the wings but also the body itself. The longer you look, more and more details become visible. Thanks to the movement which is captured in the wings by giving them some slopes, the light has free play. You can almost see the light playing with and over these wings which translates into an almost fluttering butterfly.
