Offered for sale is a vintage Swiss Made Mercator men's watch with reference number 71290, presumably dating back to the mid 1970s. Not much can be found on the Mercator brand, but they did make quality Swiss watches back in the day. That makes this one quite rare, as no other example can be found online. It's a funky piece at that, with an oversize "pebble" or "UFO" stainless steel case measuring 40mm in diameter and 14.5mm thick.
The dial on this particular example comes in silver sunburst finish with black outer ring and funky red raised indices, on which equally funky lacquered hands indicate the time. A date window can be found at the 3 O'clock position, with a rather quirky weekday window showing the day in Dutch at the 9 O'clock position. The watch is powered by a renowned Swiss Made ETA 2789 automatically wound movement, containing 25 jewels. The watch comes fitted to a brand new black perforated strap with generic buckle, to complete its vintage looks.
The example sold here has been worn throughout its life, but is still in decent condition. The case has been cleaned entirely, but was left unpolished to maintain its original shape. You will find wear marks on said case, most notably a few dents around 5, 6 and 7 O'clock. A brand new plexiglass crystal was fitted, as well as a new generic crown. The dial shows some minor signs of aging but otherwise the watch face has stood the test of time very well.
Functionally, the watch has received a full service prior to sale and is working perfectly. The movement was entirely disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and regulated.
